MCM-41 materials with a well-ordered long-range structure, a large pore size and a high surface area have been synthesized. Their surface properties including the number and the nature of the surface hydroxyl groups and surface hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity have been investigated by means of 29Si MAS NMR and FT-IR spectra and TPD of probe molecules. The results clearly show that the surface of MCM-41 has an abundance of acidic silanol groups, and that the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity can be modified by the introduction of Al and transition metals Ti, Cr, Ni and Fe into it.

In this work, we succeeded in the preparation of LiNb1-xTaxO3 films on Si(111) substrates by means of sol-gel process, and the usual sol-gel process for the preparation of LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 films on Si substrates was improved by adding a 33% aqueous solution of CH3CH2OH to the mixed sols of LiNb(OCH2CH3)6 and LiTa(OCH2CH3)6. The crystallization behavior of LiNb1-xTaxO3 films on Si(111) substrates has been studied. Highly c-axis oriented LiNb1-xTaxO3 films have been obtained within the tantalum composition range of 0<x<0.33. Some factors such as the hydrogen termination of the silicon surface, the RTP annealing process that provides the unidirectional heat flow and the preheating temperature are discussed to analyze the crystallization of the c-axis oriented films.

The IGC50(50% inhibitory growth concentration) values of 27 nitrobenzenes were determined for the population growth endpoint of Tetrahymena pyriformis. The toxicity order of the observed compounds was found to be as follows: dinitro compounds>mononitro compounds, dichloronitrobenzenes>monochloronitrobenzenes, meta-substituted nitrobenzenes>ortho-/para-substituted nitrobenzenes(NT, NPh, NAnis) except for the dinitrobenzenes and nitroanilines(DNB, NAn). Quantitative structure activity relationships(QSARs) were developed with the logarithm of the reciprocal of IGC50[lg(IGC50)-1] in mole liter as dependent variable and six molecular descriptors lgP, 1X, I, 1Ka, ∑σ- and ELUMO as independent variables. Via multiple regression analysis, one best equation was obtained:lg(IGC50)-1=3.029+0.860∑σ-+0.341In=27, r=0.924, r2=0.854, s=0.265, f=70.44, Pr>f=0.000 1The equation was used to estimate IGC50 for five analogues.

Under oxygen sparged, the synergetic effects of both anodic-cathodic electrocatalysis(ACE) and ferrous ion catalyzed anodic-cathodic electrocatalysis(FeACE) on phenol degradation were observed in an undivided cell composed of a β-PbO2 anode modified with fluorine resin and a nickel-chromium-titanium alloy net cathode. Oxygen sparging rate, ferrous concentration, and current significantly affect phenol destruction. The phenol was removed by 10%-13% increasingly under FeACE vs. ACE, and by 12%-15% under ACE vs. anodic electrocatalysis(AE). The phenol destruction was due to the formation of hydroxyl oxidant on the surface of lead oxide at the anode and the reduction of oxygen at the cathode.

The emission and Fourier transformation infrared spectra of freshly prepared porous silicon(PS) and the silicon wafer were examined. Increasing temperature generally led to a decrease in the emission intensities of the PS samples, however, the freshly prepared sample showed an unusually large and sudden increase in its emission intensity at the specific temperature at which the hydrogen ion conductivity in the silicon wafer increased. The O-H vibrations of the silicon wafer also showed a sudden decrease at the same temperature. These results are consistent with the assumption that the luminescence of fresh PS comes from the carrier-bound exciton in its confined nanostructure.

The hemolysis of human red blood cells was initiated by a water-soluble free radical initiator, 2,2′-azobis-(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride)(AAPH), at 37 ℃ in phosphate buffered saline(pH=7.4). The respective addition of 1-[N-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]tetradecane(TDCA), 1,2-di[N-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]cyclohexane(DACH), 4-[N-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]benzoic acid(PABA), 4-nitro[N-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)]aniline(APNA) or N-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)aniline(APA) can all prolong the inhibition period of hemolysis, indicating that the above Schiff bases play an antioxidative role in free radical induced hemolysis. It can be concluded that Schiff base with an alkyl group or a conjugated system in the molecule protect red blood cells against free radical induced hemolysis efficiently. This information may be useful for antioxidant drug design.

In order to learn the expression pattern of GRP1.8(glycine-rich-protein) gene promoter in transgenic plants and to explore its potential application in plant genetic engineering for vascular-specific expression of interested genes, GRP 1.8 promoter was amplified by PCR from Chinese bean genomic DNA. The intermediate vector was constructed by inserting vascular-specific expression promoter of GRP 1.8 gene in vector pBI 101. The regenerated tobacco plants obtained were analyzed by PCR to select the putative transgenic plants. The histochemical localization of GUS(β-D-glucosidase) activity indicates that as for that of GRP 1.8 promoter we can confer the vascular-specific expression of GUS gene.

Cu,Zn-SOD is a highly conserved enzyme and the controversy about its evolutionary possibility in the near future has been lively. In order to further our understanding of the future fate of human Cu,Zn-SOD, we adopted a strategy relating to the directed evolution to study how the mutants of human Cu,Zn-SOD respond to different oxidative stress. After five rounds of screening, we found a mutant that can survive under harsh pressures and DNA sequencing proves that it shows a mutation responsible for the phenomenon. However, under natural pressure, our screening comes to nothing. Then we may draw the following conclusions: the evolution of biological macromolecules in some respect depends on their surroundings and if they are too familiar with a certain environment, they may embody evolutionary inertia.

Corn peptides(CP) were prepared from zein via proteolysis by means of a type of alkaline protease, Alcalase, at 50 ℃ and pH 8.0. The anti-oxidative activity of the hydrolysate was examined. It was found that the anti-oxidative activity reached the maximum at the fourth hour of the hydrolysis and then decreased. The effect of the enzyme dosage on the solubility of corn protein, the dependence of hydrolysis time on the degree of the hydrolysis(DH) and molecular weight distribution were examined respectively. 30% DH was controlled on the basis of anti-oxidative activity. The hydrolysate was fractionated on a Sephadex G-15 column. The anti-oxidative activities were examined for all the fractions. The main fraction for anti-oxidative activity was collected and characterized by the methods of amino acid analysis, the measurement of average chain length and etc.. The main MW distribution of the main fraction was 300-600 Daltons. The anti-oxidative properties of the small peptides in vitro were studied. It was found that they could inhibit the auto-oxidation of pyrogallol and the oxidation of hemoglobin. The hemolysis degree of erythrocyte caused by hydroxyl free radicals was decreased greatly, indicating a protective effect of the anti-oxidative peptides on the cell membrane damage of erythrocyte.

Mortierella isabellina was found to accumulate large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids when it was grown in a medium containing butanol(5 g/L) and yeast extract(10 g/L) and cultivated at 25 ℃ for 5 d during which additional feeding butanol of 2 g/L was fed after being cultivated for 48 h. The resultant mycelial lipids accounted for 40.1% of the dry mycelia, while about 34% of butanol in the medium was converted. The mycelial lipids contained four kinds of unsaturated fatty acids, i.e., palmitoleic(4.9%), oleic(54.1%), linoleic(10.4%) and linolenic(5.4%) acids. Those accounted for 74.8% of the total fatty acids. The effects of the culture conditions, such as cultivation temperature, initial pH of the medium and additional feeding butanol in the course of cultivation, on the production of mycelial lipids by M. isabellina were studied.

For the catalyst systems composed of titanocene/NaH or n-BuLi, the nature and the number of the substituents on the cyclopentadienyl ring control the catalytic behavior of those two systems. The effect of the reducing agent on the catalytic activity is relatively small. In addition, the characters of the hydrogenation of various olefins catalyzed respectively by Cp2TiCl2/NaH or n-BuLi systems were compared.

The porous zirconia powder with a high surface area was synthesized by means of the ion exchange method from surfactant CTMAB. The highest surface area of the resulted zirconia reached 340 m2/g having been calcined at 500 ℃ for 2 h. The influence of preparing conditions on the surface area was investigated. The results show that the amount of the surfactant and the aging time were two main factors affecting the surface area of zirconia. The IR analysis indicated that the large surface area was related to the cations of the surfactant which incorporated into hydrous zirconia by ion exchange.

There are several paths for synthesizing 4,4′-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine, but most of them need strict experimental conditions that are not easy to be overcome. We designed a simple way to prepare this product via the oxidation of 4,4′-bismethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, followed by esterification and reduction. The yield increases and the reaction conditions become genial in contrast to those of other methods. The molecular structure of the final product was confirmed by means of elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and MS spectra.

B3LYP/6-31+g(d) calculations were performed on the hydrogen bonded complexes between substituted phenolates and HF, H2O as well as NH3. It was found that some properties of the non-covalent complexes, including the interaction energies, donor-acceptor (host-guest) distances, bond lengths, and vibration frequencies, could show well-defined substituent effects. Thus, from the substituent studies we can not only understand the mechanism of a particular non-covalent interaction better, but also easily predict the interaction energies and structures of a particular non-covalent complex, which might otherwise be very hard or resource-consuming to be known. This means that substituent effect is indeed a useful tool to be used in supramolecular chemistry and therefore, many valuable studies remain to be carried out.

The radiative curable dendritic acrylated aromatic/aliphatic polyesters based on pentaerythritol, 1,2,4-benzenetricaboxylic anhydride and epoxy propane modified with acryloyl chloride were synthesized via a divergent procedure, and their photopolymerization kinetics was studied by photo-differential scanning calorimetry. The mechanical properties and the morphology of the fracture surface of the cured dendritic polyester films were investigated by means of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy, respectively.

The analysis of the small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) data was based upon particle characteristic function, one-dimensional electron-density correlation function and particle distribution function. The microstructure of nylon 66 with different degrees of crystallinity was studied by means of X-ray scattering method. The radius of gyration Rg, the Porod radius Rp, the thickness of crystalline region Lc, the thickness of non-crystalline region La, the thickness of interphase region dtr, the long period L, the semiaxises of particles(a, a, b), the distribution of the particle sizes and the scattering invariant were calculated. The results indicate that there was a significant interphase region between the crystalline region and the non-crystalline region, and its content(Wt,x) should not be neglected in comparison with that of crystalline region Wc,x. The morphology of nylon 66 prepared by isothermal crystallization at a high temperature was mainly a lamellar structure, while the spherical crystals dominated in the quenched sample. The size of the particles in the quenched sample was smaller than that of those in the isothermally crystallized sample, and the distribution of the particle sizes in the isothermally crystallized sample was wider.

The structures and properties of benzoxazines were investigated by virtue of molecular modeling at a molecular level. By means of Cerius software(version 4.0) supplied by Molecular Simulations Inc., the molecular mechanics and the molecular dynamics were performed under a PCFF force field. Five kinds of the polymeric chains of benzoxazines were created by using polymer builder and energy minimization. The relaxation process was conducted with both energy minimization and molecular dynamics.
